We are proud to share that renowned Kurdish-Iranian filmmaker, director, and screenwriter Shahram Alidi has been selected as a jury member for the Independent Films section at the first-ever Asian Film Festival of Dubai (AFFD), taking place from 1–7 February 2027.

Organized by MovieDOM, the festival brings together independent cinema, digital creators, and streaming powerhouses to build a vibrant, community-driven cinematic ecosystem in the UAE.

Based in Paris and serving as the Artistic Director of the Slemani International Film Festival, Shahram Alidi is a celebrated voice in contemporary cinema whose work bridges poetic visual artistry, memory, and profound human resilience.

🏆 A Legacy of Cinematic Excellence:

-🎥 Sirta La Gal Ba (Whisper with the Wind) (2009): His landmark debut feature explored the tragic Anfal campaign. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival (Semaine de la Critique), winning the Prix Regards Jeunes, ACID/CCAS Support Award, and OFAJ/TV5MONDE Young Critics Prize, alongside competing for the Caméra d'Or and earning the Silver Gateway of India at the Mumbai Film Festival.

-🎥 Black Horse Memories (2015): Filmed in the Kurdish regions of Turkey and focusing on the restriction of education in the mother tongue, it premiered to international acclaim at the Busan International Film Festival.

-🎥 Acclaimed Shorts: Including Mamli, Sherko Bekas, and The Last Uncounted Village.

The inclusion of a Kurdish director on the jury of a major new Asian festival in Dubai marks a significant milestone, positioning Kurdish cinema alongside Asia's leading cinematic traditions. It also opens vital bridges for independent filmmakers across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to connect with audiences, platforms, and production networks across the Gulf and broader Asia.
